The A Matter of Balance program is an evidenced based program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels among older adults. It acknowledges the risk of falling but emphasizes practical coping strategies to reduce the fear of falling. These include:
- Promoting a view of falls and fear of falling as controllable
- Setting realistic goals for increasing activity
- Changing the environment to reduce fall risk factors
- Promoting exercise to increase strength, flexibility, and balance
Each class meets twice weekly for four weeks, for 2 hours per class. Trained coaches lead the class. Caregivers and family members are welcome. This is an interactive workshop. Information and resources are provided, group discussions are encouraged, and applicable exercises are taught. The maximum class size is 15 participants.
