PBA volunteers help prolong independent living in the community for older adults who have difficulty managing their financial affairs. They may for the first time suddenly be faced with handling the household finances, or now have a health condition that impedes their ability to read statements or write checks. Trained volunteers help older adults with their personal budget, writing checks, and organizing bills. Experience how good it feels to help an older adult living on Social Security alone receive up to $527 from the Arizona Department of Revenue! Trained PTC Volunteers screen individuals for eligibility and then help them complete the Arizona 140PTC tax form to receive their credit or renter’s rebate. Living on a limited income and receiving that credit each year can make all the difference in the world. Familiarity with preparing tax returns is not required as PCOA does not assist with full tax returns. Benefits Navigator

Do you have a knack for understanding complex systems and explaining them to others? Do you want to help remove barriers that prevent someone from accessing crucial benefits? If you would like to assist older people to apply and become eligible for public benefits such as ALTCS (Arizona Long Term Care System), LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) or simple utility discounts, this could be the rewarding volunteer opportunity for you! For this position, you should be comfortable making phone calls and utilizing a computer to send and receive emails, and sometimes attend Zoom meetings. There could also be occasional home visits to client houses. If you are bilingual (English/Spanish), that is a plus; however, it is not required.
