When your loved one is living with dementia, changes from usual traditions may be helpful when planning for the holidays. For example:
- Have holiday meals at brunch or lunch time if confusion or agitation increases later in the day.
- Have small groups of visitors if large gatherings are overwhelming.
- Take calming items or activities they enjoy to help reduce or prevent agitation (fidget items, activity mats, coloring pages, etc.).
- Wherever activities are taking place, try to find a quiet place you can take your loved one if they become agitated or need to rest.
