description
Kinship Support Services help kinship caregivers provide care, access services for children residing in their homes, and maintain family stability. Through kinship navigation, caregivers receive direct or referral assistance to provide a safe home environment. Caregivers receive professional support services and are encouraged to utilize informal support, including friends, neighbors, other kinship caregivers, and community organizations. Kinship Support Services collaborate with the caregiver and, when appropriate, with parents and other family members. Caregivers are guided in obtaining the necessary training and certification to care for the children in their homes. They are also informed of permanency options that include adoption, guardianship, or subsidized guardianship and are connected to resources that can assist them with these legal custody alternatives. The Kinship Support Services support concurrent planning and will support the permanency planning efforts of DCS. Kinship Support Services are not responsible for disclosing permanency options to other parties to the case or assessing for or facilitating reunification efforts, as developing and documenting the permanency plan is the role of DCS. Furthermore, Kinship Support Services is not responsible for counseling parents about relinquishment and alternative permanency options. The primary focus of the Kinship Support Services is to support kinship caregivers as they navigate the child welfare system.
